I am currently reading three books. I’m not really sure how this happened, because I’ve been trying to limit myself to reading ONE at a time, but yet I find myself reading THREE. I set the limit originally to make myself finish each book as I had developed a nasty habit of starting one and putting it aside in favor of another, but never picking the original back up. Then once I broke that, the one book at a time limit just continued since it was working so well. I’m in no danger of completely stopping reading any of these books, but still. I’m perplexed at how I got to THREE with the limit in place. Oh, well. As long as I actually finish these books.
And since I’m in the mood to talk books, I’ll tell you about what I’m reading!
Plot vs Character by Jeff Gerke
This was the first one I started reading. It’s been on my shelf for awhile, and it was one that I had started and then stopped in favor of another. So, this time when I picked it up, I started completely over~ Basically this book is about teaching character-first novelists the benefit of a great plot, and about teaching plot-firsters the awesome rewards of having great characters. I’m definitely a character firster, and because of that my plots tend to be a little weak. Which is the reason I picked this book up in the first place–I know a weak area in my writing and I wanted to fix it~ When I read this book last time, I got entirely through the first part…which is the part talking about developing great characters. The problem is the second part builds on the first part. Jeff (who is a plot-firster) builds plot from a character’s inner journey, so in order to actually work through the second part of the book, you first have to have a well-developed character. Which is why I simply started completely over as opposed to picking up where I left off. Also because I am using this book to help me learn a bit more about Brighten and her love interest, Emily <3
The Girl That Played With Fire by Steig Larsson
The only fiction book I’m currently reading. I was reluctant to start this one at this time because it’s 724 pages, and generally when I read fiction that long I like to have it as my only current read, otherwise it takes me far too long to get through it. But start it I did and I’m loving it so far. I absolutely loved the first book in the series, and the (American) movie (I have yet to see the other version), and I’m in love with Lisbeth Salander. Seriously–she’s my book crush!
Crafting Magick With Pen and Ink by Susan Pesznecker
Originally I picked this up thinking it would help with my ritual crafting. Since it is a book filed under Paganism and such, and it is by a Pagan author. Also because the back reads (in big, bold lettering) “Put the pen back in pentacle”. What else would a Pagan think, right? Well, I was really wrong. This book is way more about writing than about magick. And when I say writing, I mean really basic writing. For example, she talks about the difference in simile and metaphor, and the difference in fiction and nonfiction–stuff you’re taught by 8th grade.
In the beginning she talked about making your desk a sacred space with a mini altar in one corner, and provided a ritual to “mark your beginning as a writer”. After that, the most “magick” she talks about is putting dragons in your story and the different types of magickal texts that exist (Grimoire, dream journal, Book of Shadows–the typical 101 stuff).
I don’t recommend this book to anyone at all. The writing part of this is stuff you’d already know if you’d gotten even to the first day of high school, and the magickal parts can be gleaned from even Teen Witch by Ravenwolf. I’ve seriously just set aside my other two books for a day or so in order to just finish this book because I want it done so I can get rid of it. I’d just stop reading it, but I really dislike doing that, and a quick glance at the Table of Contents tells me the writing ritual bit is yet to come. So, I’ll reserve final judgement of the entire work until I’ve finished it–which will probably be tonight since I have less than 100 pages left to read and I can easily do that in an evening.

Serendipitous moment: While searching out that link for this book, a youtube video by Aislynn reviewing this book popped up on Google! I knew she had reviewed this book (it was because of her that I’d even heard of this book as she had mentioned it in another video), but I had never been able to find her actual review of it because the video isn’t tagged. A quick watch of the video tells me I’m not the only one who dislikes this book–she basically said everything I’d have to say about this book.
(Title of the post from Peter Gabriel’s Book of Love–Ang and I’s song~ <3)
